Kawartha Lakes Community Access Program

The Community Access Program (CAP) is a Government of Canada initiative, administered by Industry Canada, which aims to provide Canadians with affordable public access to the Internet and the skills they need to use it effectively. With the combined efforts of the federal, provincial and territorial governments, community groups, social agencies, libraries, schools, volunteer groups and the business community, CAP helps Canadians, wherever they live, take advantage of emerging opportunities in the new global knowledge-based economy. Under CAP, public locations like schools, libraries and community centres act as "on-ramps" to the Information Highway, and provide computer support and training.

The program plays a crucial role in bridging the Digital Divide; contributing to the foundation for electronic access to government services; encouraging on-line learning and literacy; fostering the development of community based infrastructure; and promoting Canadian e-commerce.

Kawartha Lakes CAP Partners

Technology Alliance Group for Kawartha Lakes (TAG), contributes to Kawartha Lakes Community Access Program (KL-CAP) development, provides office space and equipment, and contributes the experience and expertise of their staff in program management. Insurance coverage has been added to their existing policy to cover these multi-sites. TAG develops partnerships within our CAP network areas: TAG is the regional network administrator of the KL-CAP sites.

KL-CAP has an existing partnership with Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB). There are available, several strategically placed well equipped training labs and course participants are extremely appreciative of the learning opportunities provided through these facilities. TLDSB has partnered with KL-CAP to provide space in schools located in Woodville, Kirkfield, Oakwood, Little Britian, Ops Township and Bobcaygeon. The principals of these schools realize the value of this initiative and understand citizen involvement is an immeasurable benefit to their schools. These schools have interested teachers and community volunteers who provide assistance to users.

Our partnership with City of Kawartha Lakes Library Board system allows us to provide walk-in access, and one-on-one training opportunities for residents in Norland, Kirkfield, Kinmount, Coboconk and Oakwood, Burnt River, Dalrymple, Lindsay, Little Britain, Fenelon Falls, Bobcaygeon and Omemee and complements the hours available at each of these locations. Library patrons have become more aware of the resources and the expertise of the librarians, and the libraries are a good source of referrals and promotion for CAP locations. Classes can be presented to the librarians and staff as well as to groups of patrons, as requested.

The Kawartha Lakes Boys and Girls Club is a key partner. This organization delivers primarily social and recreational programs to children and youth, and serves over 4000 children each year. This site has generously donated space, connectivity, volunteers and staff to the youth center.

The Kawartha Community Futures Development Corporation (KLCFDC) is a key partner. A representative from this organization sits on the TAG board of directors and thus, this group has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to the initiative. KCFDC understands the result of improved technology awareness and skills on the economic development of our community.
